Course Requirements

In order to become a PADI Assistant Instructor, you:

  • Must be at least 18 years’ old
  • Must be certified as a PADI Divemaster or equivalent
  • Must have medical clearance signed by a physician
  • Must have 60 logged dives
  • Must be a certified diver for at least 6 months
  • Have an enthusiastic attitude and want to have FUN!

PADI Assistant Instructor Duties

PADI Assistant Instructors can:

  • Teach academic presentations under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
  • Evaluate Open Water Diver surface skills under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
  • Teach the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty course
  • Teach Project AWARE Specialty courses
  • Teach Coral Reef Conservation Specialty courses
  • Conduct PADI Discover Scuba experiences
  • Teach Emergency First Response after successful completion of an Emergency First Response Instructor course

Materials and Equipment Needed

Materials Needed:

  • PADI IDC Training Package
  • PADI Dive Theory Online
  • PADI Diving Knowledge Workbook
  • eRDPml and RDP Table
  • Professional Logbook

Personal Diving Equipment Required:

You will need all your own personal equipment. This includes your mask, snorkel, fins, lycra socks, boots, gloves, surface marker buoy, reel, signaling device (whistle) and cutting device (shears or knife), Basic 1st Aid Kit Cost varies depending on what pieces of equipment fit your specific needs.

Diving Equipment Needed:

You will need all your own scuba equipment. This includes regulator system with computer, BCD, cylinder, exposure suit with hood, weights and weight belt, “O” Ring and Basic Tool Kit, float with anchor system and at least 30 feet of line.

Course Scheduling

Becoming a PADI Assistant Instructor is simple as one, two, three!

Orientation: Two hours of course logistics, paperwork, scheduling and equipment fitting

Classroom: Four classroom sessions of 4 hours each, consisting of seven lectures to help you develop PADI teaching presentations, increase your diving knowledge and dive theory

Pool: Four pool sessions of 4 hours each, consisting of developing your confined water and rescue skills to teaching level, as well as presenting your PADI confined water presentations
Open Water Dives: One day at the open water, where you will give your presentations from the PADI Open Water course, as well as the PADI Specialties that you will be able to teach.

Your Instructor will sit down and design a schedule to assist you with completing your program.
